Waxed Canvas

Waxed canvas is a cotton canvas that has been saturated with wax and is water resistant. First used as sailcloth by 19th century mariners, waxed canvas is durable and has a look similar to distressed leather. It has a pleasantly textured, and supple surface.

New Old Friend hand-waxes all of the canvas with 100% beeswax collected from local apiaries.

Care and Cleaning

Wax fabrics have been successfully used for many years without washing. A periodic cleaning with a damp cloth is all that is needed. For deeper stains, you may choose to use a scrub brush and mild soap. Lightly rub in circular motions with cold water (never hot). If you get a water spot on your fabric, or are unsatisfied with general wear, you can use heat from a hair dryer to reset the wax. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

Process

All bags are made in Kara McGrane’s intimate home-studio. Using the highest quality fabrics, hardware, and tools - your bag is crafted thoughtfully and carefully. Every detail has been paid attention to, to ensure that your new item will not only be a work of art, but also strong and durable. Bags feature at least one or more of the following : water-resistant waxed canvas, 100% cotton interior fabric, brass hardware, genuine leather, and YKK zippers. Made-to-order products may take 4-6 weeks to complete from start to finish. Ready-to-ship orders will be processed and sent out as soon as possible (1-4 days).
